Ronan Gaillard's Workshop

Embedded systems, retro computers and sailing, from Saint-Malo. Things I built, and how.

ALWAYS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

My Setup

Everything I use, play with, fix and break at home, in Saint-Malo.

Some of it is modern, a lot of it is older than this blog, and most of it has been opened at least once.

At the desk

Machine What it does
MacBook Pro 16" Where I do almost everything : work, code, photos, and this blog.
Apple Studio Display A splurge, I admit. But it’s beautiful, and the pixel density is incredible.
Apple Keyboard M0116 The keyboard I type on every day, plugged in through my own ADB to USB converter.
A plaid I made myself Because a desk needs one.

Home lab

Machine What it does
The NAS Built it myself : an Intel Core i5-8500, 16 GB of RAM, a Samsung 860 EVO SSD for the system and two 4 TB Seagate IronWolf drives mirrored with ZFS. It runs NixOS and a few dozen services : files, photos, music, backups, the home automation and my side projects. The whole configuration lives in a Git repository.
Zigbee network Switches and sensors talk to zigbee2mqtt, then to Homebridge, so everything shows up in Apple’s Home app. The pilot wire radiators are on Zigbee too, with a scheduling app I wrote myself running on the NAS.
Roborock V1 My robot vacuum, rooted and running Valetudo : no cloud.
HomePods Two big ones and two minis, for music all over the house.

Games

Machine What it does
Windows PC The gaming PC in my office.
Homemade Steam Machine A second-hand Dell OptiPlex 3060 (i5-8500) with a GTX 1650, a Noctua fan and a new power supply, running Bazzite.
NES and Super NES The originals, cartridges included.

Retro corner

Machine What it does
Macintosh SE/30 The one that started it all. To tinker, have fun and feel a bit nostalgic. I brought it back to life, I’m building an Ethernet board for it, and it even scans my films.
Apple II It came after the SE/30.
PowerBook 150 And a few other old laptops.
iPod 3rd generation Modded with an SD card instead of the hard drive.
iPod 5.5th generation The white one.

Workshop

Machine What it does
Prusa MINI My 3D printer : cases, brackets, and spare parts for everything above.
Monoprice 3D printer An old one, converted into a laser engraver.

Photography

Gear What it does
Fujifilm X-T30 II My digital camera, which I taught to print on an instax Link 3.
Apple QuickTake 150 One of the very first consumer digital cameras, from 1995.
Minolta XD The Japanese version, for film.
Pentax AF35 A point and shoot, for film too.
Epson FilmScan 200 A SCSI film scanner from the 90s, driven by my SE/30 with a driver I wrote from scratch.

I develop and scan my films at home.
